The accumulated chunks of dirt, the bad smells, the dirty and smelly toilets are good enough reasons to delay and avoid cleaning one of the dirtiest room in the house. But it has to be cleaned regularly and fortunately, bathroom cleaning is not as difficult as it seems.
Getting a clean bathroom is definitely easy if you work smart and not just keep on scrubbing the brush. The good news is these bathroom deep cleaning hacks will make getting a clean bathroom a quick, easy and relaxing task for you. You will never clean your bathroom the hard way again.
What more? These bathroom cleaning hacks are all natural without the use of any harsh chemicals. Isn’t that awesome? Let’s Start.
1. Create A Checklist
Before you start cleaning the bathroom, it’s extremely helpful if you create a checklist for what you need to clean. This will make sure that you don’t miss cleaning any part of the bathroom and also have supplies ready to clean it.
Now, the checklist will differ for everyone but some common things include mirrors, bathtubs, sink and faucets, shower heads, shower doors, toilet, grout, and floors.
2. Clean the Mirror
If there are light spots and a bit of scum, then all you need to get a clean mirror is to rub some liquid dishwashing soap or soap water over the wet mirror with a cloth. Rinse with water and then wipe with a clean dry cloth. This will get the mirror rid of water stains, steam, soap scum, any other stain.
For stubborn stains and splatters, Vinegar is an effective cleaner. All you need to use is a microfiber cloth and equal parts of vinegar and water solution to give a shine to the mirror and other glassware.
3. Clean the faucets
The faucets get dirty over time and need frequent cleaning. Hard water stains, moisture, and other stains catch up the taps. Frequent cleaning makes it easier to clean them. The longer you let the stains and dirt to accumulate, the difficult it gets to treat them.
The Pitambari powder is perfect to clean those dirty faucets easily and really works wonders. First, sprinkle some water on the faucets which are to be cleaned and then put some Pitambari powder on the tap. Scrub with the help of a scrubber for 30 secs until you see the vanishing effect on the stains.
Then rinse with water and wipe the tap with a dry cloth. The tap will regain its lost shine in no time.
Quick Note: This powder is only available on Amazon as it’s an International product but it works like charm and is affordable too.
4. Deep Clean the Faucet Handles
Over the course of time, dirt and gunk start to accumulate inside faucet handles. So, cleaning the interior of faucet handles every once in a while is a good thing. And cleaning them is not hard too.
All you need to do is to remove the cover and handle using a screwdriver. Soak them in vinegar, give a quick scrub and your faucets are clean again!
5. Shine the Chrome using Baby Oil
Weird? I know but it works so give it a try. Baby oil is also a lot cheaper than a chrome cleaner and works well in shining everything from faucets to hubcaps.
All you need to do is to dab a little baby oil to a cotton cloth and use it to wipe off your metal surfaces and faucets for a perfect shine.
6. Cleaning the tiles
White vinegar is an amazingly good cleaning ingredient which helps in cleaning the tiles easily. Take around a small cup of vinegar and mix with equal parts of water and a drop or 2 of liquid soap. Moisten a cloth in the mixture and rub it vigorously on the tiles.
Or you can do what we do, just fill this mixture in a sprayer and clean the tiles with a sponge. Vinegar removes most dirt without scrubbing and doesn’t leave a film.
7. Clean the Grout
Grout can be hard to clean. For cleaning the grout, a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide works wonders. Just mix 1/2 cups baking soda, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide, and 1/2 tsp dish soap into a medium-size bowl.
Mix into a smooth paste, apply on the grout and wait for at least 30-35 minutes. Now, scrub into grout with an old toothbrush and rinse. Your grout will be shiny clean.
8. Clean that dirty Mildew!
Bathrooms are easily attacked by mildews. To prevent their growth, encourage as much ventilation as possible. Keep the windows and ventilators open for allowing the air to circulate. Try to keep your bathroom cool with less humidity.
Allowing ventilation also helps in eliminating bad odor from the bathroom, thus serving a dual purpose. Still, if it appears, apply a paste of vinegar and borax on the affected area and leave it to dry for 1-1.5 hours. Then clean it with a wet cloth. Magic! The area will be as clean as it was before.
9. Cleaning the Bathtub
Soap scum, yellowishness, and oily linings start appearing in certain areas of the bathtub if not cleaned regularly. To clean the bathtub, sprinkle baking soda all over the bathtub and then spray hydrogen peroxide over it. Wait for sometime to allow the mixture to react. Scrub a little and then rinse with warm water.
It is such an easy process as compared to rubbing the bathroom vigorously. This will also eliminate foul smell if any. This method can be used to clean other ceramic fittings as well.
10. Clean the Shower
Scum is one of the most common things that accumulate on the shower and the glass around the showers. The hack used to clean this shower scum is the same as that used in cleaning the tiles. Use a cloth dipped in vinegar to clean the scum. You can even use stockings.
Unlike the tiles, rub the surface lightly as these are glass shower doors. Rinse with clean water and then wipe with a clean dry cloth. If things are not so good as with many people, then magic eraser is your best friend.
Magic eraser works amazingly very well in cleaning the hard water stains from glass shower doors. This works not just for shower doors, but also bathroom mirrors, chrome fixtures, and glass in general.
11. Deep Clean the Showerhead
Cleaning the showerhead might be one of the easiest cleaning hacks in this list. You just need a resealable plastic bag and vinegar to clean the showerhead easily and effectively.
All you need to do is to just immerse the showerhead in a resealable plastic bag filled with vinegar and secure the bag with a rubber band. Let it sit for an hour or two and remove the bag. Now, run the shower for a minute or two to remove any dirt from the shower.
12. Clean the Shower Curtain
While cleaning the bathroom, most people neglect the cleaning of the shower curtain. Fortunately, cleaning a shower curtain is pretty easy.
All you need to do is to just throw it in the wash with a cup of vinegar and laundry detergent.
13. Sink Cleaning
Now, your sink won’t be as bad as other areas but it still needs some attention. A mixture of dishwashing liquid and warm water combined with some elbow grease is usually enough to clean the sink.
After cleaning, you can make the porcelain sparkle by using a small amount of Bar-Keeper’s friend. You’ll be thrilled at how your sink gleams!
14. Clean the Exhaust Fan
Another neglected area of the bathroom, the exhaust fan also needs regular cleaning. Take a vacuum and clean the dust form vent using the crevice and brush accessories. If it’s still dirty, clean it using a scrub brush and dawn dish.
Another useful hack to clean exhaust fan is to spray the dusty exhaust fan with canned air.
15. Cleaning the toilet
Here comes the king of dirtiness, which we prefer cleaning just before we clean the floor when cleaning the bathroom. I know it’s a most hated chore but you have to clean it. Right? Thankfully, there are a number of ways to clean the toilet properly and easily.
A popular one is to empty a can of cola in the toilet. Try to cover every area and then allow it to sit for 30-40 minutes. Do some scrubbing with a toilet brush and then flush. This carbonated drink is very efficient in dealing with a dirty toilet.
Another method is to sprinkle baking soda all over the toilet and then pouring some hydrogen peroxide over it. Leave the pot in this state for 10-15 minutes. Then scrub with your toilet brush. Meanwhile, stuff a paper towel soaked in vinegar under the rim of the toilet.
Remove the paper and scrub under the rim with a small brush (toothbrush can easily access this area). Now flush and you will observe that all the germs, scum and dirt has vanished away leaving the toilet sparkling clean.
In my opinion, the second method works better than cleaning with coke and is also economical.
16. Clean the Toilet Brush
As important it is to clean the toilet, it’s also important to deep clean the toilet brush once in a while. All you need to do to clean the toilet brush is to add a small amount of Pine-Sol to the holder. It will make sure that your brush is ready to use next time you need to scrub while also making the whole bathroom smell fresh at the same time.
17. Clean The Loofah
Your loofah needs cleaning at least once every week no matter which loofah you use. Even though we use them to clean ourselves, they hold a boatload of germs. Cleaning them is not hard, just soak them in a diluted bleach solution for 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Also, make sure you replace your loofah every four to six weeks
18. Dealing with rust stains
If your bathroom fittings get hard water rust stains, treat them with WD 40. WD 40 helps remove rust as it breaks down the bonds between metal and rust. Spray the rusted surface with WD-40, enough to thoroughly soak the area. Allow it to sit for around 10 minutes.
Clean them with a wire brush and magic! Rust is gone. Treat these as soon as possible to get better results.
19. Clean the Walls
Regain the lost shine of bathroom walls using a Swiffer sweeper, Magic Eraser and a clean cloth. Start with cleaning up any marks using a magic eraser and then mop the walls using the Swiffer. Don’t use water to clean the walls as wet walls are perfect for inviting molds to your bathroom. If you see any wet or damp areas left, wipe it with a clean cloth to help it dry.
20. Clean The Floor
Floor cleaning is a task which you should tackle at the end because if anything falls on the floor while cleaning other areas in your bathroom, you don’t have to clean it again.
Start by vacuuming or sweeping the bathroom floor to clear any dust. After cleaning the dust, clean the grout using the method mentioned above for cleaning the grout. Now, grab some non-stick cooking oil spray and apply it to the areas with heavy soap scum buildup.
Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and wash it with cold water. This will get rid of soap scum on the floor easily. Now, just mop on the floor to finish everything off. If you don’t see soap scum buildup in your bathroom you can skip this and just mop the floor to give it a clean finish.
21. Clean the Drains
Clogged drains can be an expensive affair. But, that expense can be prevented by keeping your drain clean which is inexpensive and easy.
All you need to do to clean a drain is some Aka Seltzer tablets and Vinegar. Just drop 2-3 tablets down the drain and pour a cup of vinegar over it and wait for 5-10 minutes. Now, pour a bucket of hot water and rinse out the drain. Doing this from time to time will keep your drains clean and unclogged.
Note: You can also use the same method to unclog a drain too.
